New Zealand OSCE Exam

The New Zealand OSCE exam is a key clinical exam for International Qualified Nurses (IQN). It tests objective structured clinical skills and scenarios to assess practical nursing skills, clinical reasoning, patient safety and communication skills.

What is the New Zealand OSCE Exam?

This will be a practical in-person test held at the Nurse Maude Simulation and Assessment Centre in Christchurch, NZ. Registered Nurse candidates will complete 10 stations and Enrolled Nurses will complete 8 stations. Each station will be 12 minutes long.

Nursing Registration and TruMerit Certification

Before starting your nursing registration you should ensure you are eligible and meet Nursing Council requirements. In general, you will require a minimum of 1800 hours post registration nursing experience for the correct pathway. You will also need to complete the required credential verification with TruMerit.

OSCE Tips

Ensure you are regularly practicing clinical skills, medication safety, infection control and patient assessment. Practice explaining treatments, gaining consent, keeping patients private and practicing safe nursing. Research the New Zealand nursing standards and cultural safety expectations.

Practicing mock exams will help you get used to the stations and time management. This will allow you to practice different clinical scenarios and identify areas you may wish to improve upon. Ensure you are practicing how to safely complete procedures, explaining what you are doing and putting the patient first.

Practicing clinical skills will give you the opportunity to develop your skills in a simulated setting. You will be able to practice nursing procedures, communication skills and gain confidence. Regular practice and feedback will help you identify your strengths and areas you can improve.
